Growing up in a modest two-room home in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar colony, Nandkumar Hendre never imagined he'd become one of India’s top names in printing. “I only dreamt of cricket,” he recalls, “but my Gujarati school friends sparked something new in me—the spirit of entrepreneurship.” As the eldest son of a linotype operator and a schoolteacher, Hendre’s life took a turn when he joined The Times of India as a technical apprentice earning ₹464 per month. That wasn’t enough. “I told myself—this is not my pitch, I have to do something on my own.” The breakthrough came in 1988 when a fast-turnaround print job earned him four times his salary. “For the first time, I was tempted by money—and that little greed gave me the courage to start,” he shares. With ₹15,000 borrowed from a cooperative credit society, Hendre launched Print House India. From juggling a job, studies, and a fledgling business, to building a ₹150 crore enterprise, he never looked back. Now also a hotelier and restaurateur, Hendre is taking bold strides into packaging. “In five years,” he says, “I want to offer world-class packaging that’s affordable for every product—food, drinks, anything. That’s my next innings.”
